Freelance PR and social media whizz Mai Ann Nguyen met her husband whilst living and working in Tokyo. Before moving to the city, she had studied to become a pharmacist, but quickly realised it wasn’t the career path for her.
The couple had their first daughter, Zooey whilst still in Tokyo, but after a year and a half, decided to move to back to Southern California. Zooey has just become a big sister to their second daughter, Amelie.
Mai has become well known for her amazing sense of style and she runs two hugely successful Instagram accounts – one for Zooey’s cool-kid outfits: @zooeyinthecity and her own: @maisassygirl.
At The bonnie mob we’ve loved following Mai’s mama and mini matching outfit snaps, and since the arrival of Amelie there’s been lots of super-cute big sister, little sister twinning going on. We asked Mai about how she chooses the girls’ outfits and how she’s raising them. Read our interview with her below….
HOW DOES ZOOEY FEEL ABOUT BECOMING A BIG SISTER?
Zooey absolutely LOVES IT.
DO THE GIRLS HAVE A REALLY CLOSE BOND ALREADY?
Yes! They do! Zooey loves to have her sister lay in bed with her in the mornings or will climb on baby’s crib and talks sweetly to Amelie. I always catch them holding hands and it’s the cutest thing ever.
WE LOVE YOUR #ZOOEYXAMELIE TWINNING POSTS, WHAT IS YOUR APPROACH TO DRESSING THE GIRLS?
I thought it would be cute to dress them alike because people do that with their twins but my goal is to do it with cool brands. We are lucky when we find brands that have clothes from 0 – 5 years old.

WHAT DOES ZOOEY THINK ABOUT MATCHING WITH AMELIE?
She loves it! After I dress Amelie to bring her to Zooey’s bed to shoot, she always gets excited and says “MAMA!! Amelie is matching with me!’.
HAVE YOU PASSED DOWN ANY OF ZOOEY’S BABY OUTFITS TO AMELIE?
We have hand me downs but they don’t fit Amelie yet…
DOES ZOOEY CHOOSE HER OWN OUTFITS? AND HAS SHE STARTED TO DEVELOP HER OWN SENSE OF STYLE YET?
I sometimes let her choose and have a say in what we will leave the house in. I let her choose her shoes these days too. She also prefers dresses / skirts over anything so we always pick a dress that has a matching onesie design for Amelie.
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING WHEN RAISING GIRLS?
Confidence! I want Zooey to be comfortable and secure with who she is and not be affected by peer pressure. If she wants to do something, then she needs to do it at her best and not give up.

AND WHAT’S THE ONE THING YOU’D LIKE TO TEACH THEM AS THEY GROW UP?
Respect! This is a really big thing in our Asian culture [the girls are half Vietnamese and Japanese], so we teach and practice good manners. When someone compliments Zooey, she needs to say thank you. When someone talks to her, she needs to acknowledge it. Of course if she is shy and not comfortable, she can let me know and I will respond for her.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE TRENDS FOR LITTLE ONES THIS SUMMER?
I have noticed a lot of embroidery and patches recently. Floral is making a comeback too. I always love summer style – the dresses, rompers, jumpsuits…
AND FINALLY, DESCRIBE YOUR PERFECT WEEKEND WITH ZOOEY & AMELIE…
My perfect weekend would be when their dad can also hang with us and we make memories together as a family doing something fun, and we also have it documented! We hardly have photos together as a family because Zooey’s dad works a lot. It’s really cute when Zooey and her dad hang out and I can focus on the baby. Perhaps a weekend away in a nice resort where I don’t have to clean up after us (lol), eat good food and no whining or crying from anyone hahaha!
