Eating Organic with the kids this Christmas

by The Bonniemob on December 03, 2015

THIS WEEK'S FEATURE MUM JULIE SAMUEL, IS TRACEY'S SISTER AND RUNS REALFOODSOURCE, AN ONLINE HEALTH FOOD RETAILER BASED IN SCOTLAND, SOURCING THE BEST QUALITY REAL FOODS FROM AROUND THE WORLD AND MAKING THEM AVAILABLE TO EVERYONE AT THE VERY BEST PRICES.

They sell things like organic coconut oils, chia seed, chocolate, quinoa, nuts, goji berries, cacao and protein powders.  Julie says "a lot of people would call our products superfoods but we never use that term to refer to our products as we believe it's been overused to sell foods in the last few years, we just call them very healthy foods we love!".  All foods they sell are gluten and dairy free and most are soy free too. Their focus is on maximum food quality with minimum fancy packaging to keep prices low as they firmly believe eating healthy should not be expensive.  RealFoodSource are a bit different from your regular wholefoods seller and also put together lots of recipes for the products they sell too,  Julie says "although a lot of our best selling products such as coconut oil are now mainstream we know a lot of things such as chia and goji berries can be a bit of an impulse buy when customers hear or read that they are healthy. We don't like to think someone will buy one of our products, try them once or twice then they never get used again so we put together our favourite recipes into ebooks for our products and we give these away on our website for free. That means customers can learn to use something like chia for everything from porridge to smoothies to cookies to pasta sauce, energy bars and cookies and the pack won't just sit in the cupboard!".

SO WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING AS A BUSY MUM IN THE RUN UP TO CHRISTMAS?

The list is always so long at this time of year!  As well as all the Christmas parties and present wrapping we'll be doing lots of baking.  My little one Ava loves to help make things so we'll be making cookies, homemade chocolates and a Christmas cake.  We've put together a FREE Christmas recipe ebook on our website this year that is full of amazing and easy gluten, dairy and soy free recipes and added lots of fun recipes to make with the kids.  The Rudolph reindeer cookies are amazing!

ANY TIPS FOR CHRISTMAS AND THE HOLIDAYS?

"MAKE YOUR OWN DECORATIONS AND VISIT MUSEUMS!"

We've been busy making our own stars and bunting this year and the kids keep bringing lots of great things home from school and nursery that we are putting up all round the house. I wouldn't say they are the most glamorous :-) but there is something so nice about decorating the house with things the kids have made and I love it when you open the Christmas box from the loft each year and find the tree bauble they made with their hand print from nursery a few years ago and now those hands are so big!  We also use our RealFoodSource chocolate and make our own chocolate decorations for the tree. Our organic coconut sugar chocolate is great for that as it's just pure cocoa paste and cocoa butter sweetened with coconut sugar (not cane sugar), its got absolutely nothing else in it so I don't worry if the kids keep eating them all off the tree! Making the tree chocolate decorations is so easy too, if I can do it anyone can! You just need a chocolate mould from the craft shop, melt the chocolate and get the kids to pour it into the mould, pop it in the fridge and a few hours later you can pop them out and hang them on the tree! Alternatively try our recipe for Christmas baubles!

We've also been visiting a lot of museums recently and I'd forgotten how many fantastic free ones we are so lucky to have. We went through to Glasgow last weekend and took the kids to the Museum of Transport which they loved.  The fire engine was a big hit and Sam loved all the old fashioned cars, buses and trucks!

WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE REALFOODSOURCE PRODUCT?

It would have to be our organic raw wet milled coconut oil.  We sell the biggest range of organic coconut oils in the UK and our raw wet milled oil has to be my favourite one.  It's a wonderful oil and is so versatile, we bake and cook with it and we also cover the kids in it too, it makes the most amazing baby oil after the bath for my 2 year old and it's an amazing moisturiser, eye makeup remover and lip balm for us mums too! You can grab it here .

WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE BONNIE MOB PIECE FROM AW15?

Each year I always love the snuggly, warm hats and scarfs, and having Aunty Tracey in the family means we've worn a lot of them over the years! This year I haven't been able to get the Maggs Pom Pom hat off Ava's head (it is cold up here in Scotland!).  She also loves her Alice Organic Cotten dress which she's been wearing to every party, the detail with the frill at the back is such a lovely touch and the design is so fun for winter. She also loves that it is named after her cousin, Aunty Tracey's daughter!
