FEELING THE LOVE

by The Bonniemob on February 02, 2018

An update on our work with Refugee Support Europe

LOVE is all around and we’re certainly feeling it as we approach Valentine’s Day. We’re proud to report that we’ve had another really successful season with our Selfish Mother collaboration and we were able to donate nearly £2000 to Refugee Support Europe at the end of last year.

The collection of cotton and cashmere jumpers for mum and rompers for little ones, emblazoned with the word LOVE and MOTHER, have been really popular and were seen all over Instagram on mums and their little ones including Georgia Jones, Izzy Judd, Susie Verrill, Kelly Mindell, Amber and Kirsty of Meet The Wildes and Michelle Cottle of Dear Orla.

Where will the money we raised go?

We’re so grateful to every one of you that showed your support and shopped the collection. The money that we were able to donate to the charity will go to help mums and their little ones living in several refugee camps across Greece. The families who live there have fled their homes in war-torn countries such as Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan and many have truly heartbreaking stories to tell. If you’d like to find out more, read one new mum’s story about how she came to live in one of the camps here.

What’s next?

The charity has started to turn their attention to Bangladesh where the needs are even greater.

Paul Hutchings, Director of the charity tells us: “It’s off the scale actually and so we’re really feeling the pressure to manage how much we can do there.

They have found a ‘small’ camp of 6300 people. 1100 of those living there are under 5 years old and there are 175 pregnant women. Heartbreakingly, they have nothing and it gets very cold at night, with people sleeping on mud floors. Sanitation is very poor and there is little access to clean water.

There have been talks to timetable the return of the Rohingya people to Myanmar. However this can’t happen until their safety can be guaranteed. Paul tells us “The scale of the problem is mind-boggling so we will be focusing on those groups which are particularly vulnerable and need extra support.”

Meanwhile at the Katsikas camp in the Greek islands, there has been sudden influx of people arriving. Paul tells us the accommodation for them there is much better, but the asylum processing system is not keeping pace with the numbers of arrivals. For many, it takes a year for them to even have their first interview. There is little they can do except wait. Paul says “This takes a dreadful toll on their mental health and on the children’s education. We can provide some stability and show people care, but faster processing so they can continue with their lives is the thing that will have the biggest impact.”

We are really pleased to say that we will be continuing to support the vital work that the charity is doing and have an exciting new collection launching later this year, so watch this space!

Thank you again to everyone who has bought one of our charity jumpers or rompers, LOVE The bonnie mob team Xx
